We had the honor of hearing from Chief Deputy Jeff Schultz this morning. He explained his background and why he decided to work in the Correctional Facilities. One of many intriguing stories was in regard to the garden the purgatory inmates do. Although the land was called ‘purgatory land’ because of the poor soil that doesn’t allow for gardens to grow, the purgatory inmates take such good care of the garden that it has flourished. The garden provides enough vegetables for all the meals at Purgatory plus some. Chief Deputy Jeff Schultz runs a great operation and sets the standard very high for purgatories in Utah.
What a nice experience. I think its great when the LEOs get out into the community. I'd like to think that it fosters greater empathy on the part of the public. We get to see them as fathers, husbands and normal people instead of "bully" cops.
