Toys For Tots

We had the privilege of hearing from Rick Massey with Toys for Tots. Due to the continued down economy, many parents struggle to provide for their families and are unable to give their children anything for Christmas. Toys for Tots is there to give the children some gifts for Christmas. Volunteers and donations are always needed and appreciated for this great organization. Around 3,000 children will benefit from Toys for Tots in the St. George Area alone. As some people refuse to ask for help from others, Rick suggested that we provide names and information of families in need this holiday season. It is truly the season of giving.

Yard and Garden

It was great listening to Richard Heflebower, Horticulture Resources Agent for USU, give us tips on keeping our shrubs, lawns, and gardens in great shape. November is a great time to fertilize lawns and get them ready to look great again in the Spring. Weeds were discussed and the enjoyment of dealing with them each summer. The ‘sleeping bag’ approach to Palms trees is not recommended as Palm trees don’t exhort their own heat, so covering them does nothing. Putting Christmas lights on them will help keep them warmer even if others think you just don’t want to put down your Christmas lights later in the winter. If anyone would like to be added to Richard’s e-newsletter, let him know by e-mailing him at rick.h@usu.edu

Veterans Day Parade

The Exchange Club had a great time participating in the St George Veterans Day Parade even though it was a little chilly. We handed out hundreds of flags to those who came out to the parade. Thank you to those who serve and sacrifice that our country may have the freedoms we cherish!

October Students of the Month

All the students that are honored throughout the year are seniors and are recognized for their scholastic achievements, community involvement, and leadership at their respective school. One student from the eight students honored from each high school throughout the school year as a Student of the Month will have the opportunity to become Student of the Year from their school and receive a college scholarship to the college of their choice from the St. George Exchange Club. The following students were recognized for their outstanding contributions to their schools and selected as the October 2012 Student of the Month by the St. George Exchange Club: Jessica Peterson (PVHS), Kaleb Caplin DHHS, Shalynne Seegmiller (DHS), Madeline Berger (SCHS), and Kadan Holt (MHS).

Thank You Sponsors!

The St George Mayors Walk was a good time for all those who participated. It wouldn’t be possible to put on these great events without our sponsors and volunteers. Thank you to everyone who made this event possible. The weather was perfect, scones delicious, good prize drawings, and just a lot of fun.

St. George Parks & Trails

City of St George Parks’ Division is definitely keeping busy with all of the new projects. Laura Taylor discussed the Little Valley park project where numerous pickle ball courts will be added as well as more parks and trails in the near future. The pickle ball courts are projected to be finished before the Huntsman World Senior Games. Also, The new trail system on Red Hills Pkwy is going to be a great addition to the 40+ miles of trails already provided for everyone to enjoy and stay healthy. To find out more about current and future plans of the trails and parks in St. George, you can go to www.sgcity.org/parks.

Washington County Water District

We had the pleasure of hearing from Ron Thompson of the Washington County Water Conservancy District this morning. Due to the area in which we live, water conservation and demand is very important. Going into the future, Ron is working diligently to obtain the final approval to bring a water pipeline from Lake Powell to Washington County in order to meet the demands of the growing population. With the ideal weather, proximity to so many things, and great community, St George and the surrounding areas will likely continue to be one of the fastest growing areas in Utah for years to come. As we all know because we live here, it is just a great place to be!

A Dinner to Remember

First it was wind, then clouds, fire smoke, lightning and rain. Great
evening for the installation dinner at the park! Thank you to everyone who
came last night and enjoyed the wrath of Mother Nature. Hopefully this isn't
a sign of things to come for the next year :)
